Did you know that professional bookkeepers have an oath or code of ethics? When choosing a bookkeeper to help with your business finances, it is important to make sure the bookkeeper knows their ethical responsibilities. Depending on where they have been trained, the professional bookkeeper should identify their oath, code, or ethical responsibilities.

Caviness Bookkeeping Solutions understands that a professional bookkeeper has an oath to live by. Our oath is as follows:

  • I will uphold the bookkeeper oath by choosing to act with honesty, objectivity, confidentiality, and professionalism in all interactions with my clients and on behalf of my clients to the best of my ability and judgement.

Professional bookkeepers must have open and honest communications with clients. They must remain objective and unbiased. They must also protect financial data and keeping things confidential.

We understand that your business finances are very personal and private. Making sure a potential bookkeeper understands their ethical responsibilities and can identify theirs to you, the client, is the upmost importance. Professionally trained bookkeepers should always identify their ethical responsibilities to potential clients.

Some professional bookkeepers may have a code/rules of ethics. Some may identify obligations to several parties. They may identify obligations to clients, to society, and to the bookkeeping and accounting professions.

Whatever the code, rule, or obligation, always ask your potential professional bookkeeper about their ethical responsibilities. If they cannot, find a new professional bookkeeper.
